I have decided that today is a perfect day for a shoot, and maybe it will help me forget about the weirdness that was yesterday. Taking my camera out to the woods I shoot the surroundings around me. After one of the clicks of my finger, I notice a figure brush pass a tree ahead of me.
Putting my camera down, I venture towards the destination of the movement. But nothing is there. 'How?' I know I saw something. I do notice a red ribbon blowing from one of the branches below.
Baffled, I crouch down, and touch it to make sure it’s real.
“Save me.” I hear a light voice whisper in my ear, but when I turn around there is no one. Shocked, I look around to find the owner of those words, but I find no evidence that anyone is around.
I hear a branch snap behind me, frozen I feel scared to look. “Violet?” I hear a familiar voice from behind, and when I turn. I notice both David and Karoline a few feet away.
“I didn’t know you two were stopping by,” I say with a smile.
My brother looks at me with wondering eyes. “What are you doing out here?”
“Oh nothing, just taking a few photos.” I respond pointing to where my camera once was. Looking around confused, I find it only a few feet away from its original spot. I must of kicked it without knowledge. 'Yeah that has to be it.'
Grabbing it, I lead the two inside.
“So, why did you two stop by?” I ask them as I lean on the island of the kitchen.
“We just felt like hanging out.” David answers my question with a small shrug.
Karoline gives me a small smile. Always being friendly, yet she decides to mostly take the quiet observational approach to things.
Walking my way to the living room, I drag them along. “If you're going to stay, do you mind if I roll a stiff one? Maybe pass it around, and calm a little.” I ask trying to hide how much I need it.
“I don't mind, do you?” David looks to Karoline for her approval.
“I'm down with that.” She says with a smile that doesn't quiet reach her eyes.
'That's good enough for me.' I indicate as I grab my supplies.
“What have you been up to this morning thus far?” David fills the air as I slice down the belly of the cigar. “I’ve just been up taking a few shots, what about you two?”
Braking the deep red bud into smaller pieces, I listen to their responses. “Just trying to find something to do today, so I figured we could see you.” My little brother says with a warm smile, and I notice Karoline slip her fingers his hand.
The two are so cute, and I’m not sure why they haven’t made it official yet. “Are things okay here?” Karoline asks with a weird look on her face. “Yeah, why would you ask?”
“It just feels really heavy in here. I can’t explain it.” Her soft voice responds, and I join the two on the couch when I’m done. “Don’t worry, things are fine hear.” I try to ease her worries.
Once I light up, I take a few hits before passing it. Before long we all are just glued to the couch laughing, and packing away any snacks we find in the cupboards. Jebb even trails his way into the living room to join us.
“Hey little man,” Karoline picks him up cuddling him close to David and her. Smiling wide, she talks in a sweat tone to him.
“Hey guys, I’ll be back. Bathroom calls.” I let them know before leaving the room. Wondering away, I notice a chill down my spine, but I’m too high to care.
When I get back, I hear their voices, and pause right around the corner to listen. Admiring the lightness between the two.
“You know you have really pretty eyes.” Karoline’s gets out giggling, and I notice her falling into my little brother’s lap. “My eyes, yours’ sparkle every time you smile. That’s why I always like to make you laugh Ember.”
He bites his lip looking down, and I can tell that he is wanting to tell her how he truly feels about her. He always acts shy when he is holding back something.
I feel the hair on the back of my neck rise, but I am to distracted by the scene in front of me to pay much mind to it.
“Ember I want to tell you something, but I’m not sure how.” His tone shakes at a level that you could only hear from years of knowing him.
Karoline looks up at him, and gives him a warm comforting smile. “Well then just tell me.”
Hesitant at first, he finally starts to get the words out. “Ember, I think I’m falling for…”
I feel nails piece my skin as they drag down my back. “Ow!?” I jump from my spot confused. Looking back, I don’t see anyone.
“Are you okay?” David asks confused, and I notice them both looking at me with concern.
“I think, I’m not sure what happened though.” Still in shock, I just take a seat back next to them.
We finish our hang out, and it isn’t long before we are saying our farewells.
“You guys are welcome back anytime.” I tell them, as I watch them head down my drive to my father’s truck. They tease each other down the walk, and I shut the door once they are safely inside.
The distant stars twinkled brightly as Max Well watched them pass by the viewport. He finally had a few minutes to relax after a long night of monitoring the ships machinery.
